Researchers examined data from 31 trials and found that clinical use of hydroxyethyl starch for acute volume resuscitation among critically ill patients carried a higher risk of death compared with other solutions. Hydroxyethyl starch also raised the risk of severe kidney injury and the need for red blood cell transfusions. The findings appeared in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
