  Wellness Programs & Trends
  • Gamification becomes popular wellness strategy
Discovery Communications and Capital One are among the Washington, D.C.-area employers using gamification or corporate challenges as a wellness strategy. Discovery's latest 16-week competition drew 369 teams with almost 2,600 employees, who each lost an average of 8 pounds. A third of Capital One employees globally competed in its team-based, eight-week challenge last year, logging 7.8 million minutes of exercise and losing an average of 7 pounds each. • Study: Mediterranean-style diet reduces cardiovascular risks
A Mediterranean-style diet may prevent about 30% of heart attacks, strokes and deaths from cardiovascular disease in high-risk patients, according to a study published on the website of The New England Journal of Medicine. University of Vermont nutrition professor Rachel Johnson called the study from the University of Barcelona "really impressive" because it used meaningful end points rather than just risk factors such as cholesterol, hypertension or weight. • Many U.S. adults consume too much alcohol
Researchers looked at a nationally representative survey of about 5,400 adults and found that 18% of men and 11% of women exceeded the limits set by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for daily alcohol consumption. The heaviest drinkers were 31- to 50-year-olds in men and 51- to 70-year-olds in women, the study in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics found. • Medicare wellness exam, benefits underutilized by seniors
Most seniors do not take advantage of a free wellness exam offered to new Medicare beneficiaries, available during the first year of Medicare coverage. "Government and private studies show that fewer than 10% of beneficiaries are using the welcome to Medicare exam," said Dan Mendelson, the head of Avalere Health. Many seniors also are not aware of all the other free preventive measures and benefits, such as smoking-cessation services, that are covered by Medicare. • Protect Medicare Advantage
Proposed changes to Medicare Advantage payments will affect the 14 million beneficiaries who rely on this critically important part of Medicare. Combined with the cuts included in the health reform law, these changes will likely result in higher out-of-pocket costs, reduced benefits and fewer health care choices.
