- Cisco opens access to APIs to give developers tools to fight fraud
Cisco Systems is taking steps to mitigate global telecom fraud losses by opening up the application programming interface for its ISR G2 branch routers, which will enable third-party developers to design customized network security applications. Cisco's UC Gateway Services API can be used to engage network information to detect a variety of malicious activity including unauthorized network and service use, and denial-of-service attacks. The pair of new Federal Communications Commission appointments that the Senate confirmed Monday won rave reviews from AT&T and other interested parties. President Barack Obama selected Republican Ajit Pai and Democrat Jessica Rosenworcel to the FCC. ADTRAN has finalized its acquisition of Nokia Siemens Networks' fixed-wireless broadband business, which was purchased for an undisclosed sum. - Researchers applying Wi-Fi to break data-center congestion
Engineers at the University of California, Santa Barbara, are developing a method for using Wi-Fi to alleviate bottlenecks in data-center traffic that they say can boost overall efficiency as much as 30%. The technology, known as "3D beamforming," relies on bandwidth in the 60-GHz frequency to handle short-burst traffic during peak periods, eliminating the need for costly infrastructure. Computerworld
