- Bartonella is linked to rheumatoid illness in people
Researchers found antibodies to bartonella, an insect- and sometimes cat-transmitted bacteria, in 62% of nearly 300 patients with illnesses including rheumatoid symptoms. "If the link between bartonella and rheumatoid illnesses is valid, it may also open up more directed treatment options for patients with rheumatoid illnesses," said veterinarian Ed Breitschwerdt of North Carolina State University. - Government program boosts large animal veterinarians in N.D.
A government loan repayment plan, which offers up to $80,000 in tuition reimbursement if a veterinary graduate works in large animal practice in a rural area, has increased the number of large animal veterinarians in rural North Dakota. Since the Veterinary Loan Repayment Program began in 2008, 15 large animal veterinarians have entered the workforce in rural parts of the state. KFYR-TV (Bismarck, N.D.)

- Veterinarian clears quarantined exotic animals in Ohio
A veterinarian has reviewed test results from the five animals who survived after their owner freed dozens of exotic animals from their pens last year in Zanesville, Ohio, and then committed suicide. Lab work shows the animals are free from infectious diseases, though they remain under observation for rabies until Friday. A hearing on the animals' future is scheduled for next week, as the Zanesville man's widow is attempting to regain ownership of them. The Review (Alliance, Ohio)/The Associated Press

- To prevent West Nile virus, vaccinate horses
California had 15 confirmed cases of West Nile virus in horses last year, and state veterinarian Annette Whiteford reminded owners that it could happen again unless they have their horses vaccinated. "If people get the necessary shots for their horses now, the animals will have optimal protection against the disease," Dr. Whiteford said. The Porterville Recorder (Calif.)

- Juvenile condor and Internet sensation has veterinary exam
Saticoy, a 6-week-old condor who is the darling of people all over the world thanks to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park's Condor Cam, received a veterinary exam on Monday, including blood collection for lab tests, microchip placement and a West Nile virus vaccine. In the 1980s, there were fewer than two dozen wild condors, but those numbers have rebounded to an estimated 386 today thanks to efforts by zoos in the U.S. and Mexico and government agencies.
