A study in Diabetes found the risk of type 2 diabetes grew by 3% for every point in a high-density lipoprotein cholesterol genotype score, while a one-point increase in a triglyceride genotype score was associated with a 2% increased risk of developing the disease. - Brain region signals obese people to eat despite unneeded calories
Morbidly obese individuals have higher glucose metabolism in the striatal region of the brain, responsible for rewarding emotions and desires, compared with their leaner counterparts, according to a study in PLoS One. "The results suggest that obese individuals' brains might constantly generate signals that promote eating even when the body would not require additional energy uptake," lead researcher Lauri Nummenmaa said. - Teen-centered weight-loss program shows benefits in obese girls
A study in Pediatrics revealed that overweight or obese teen girls who underwent a behavioral program that offered separate training for their parents attained slightly lower BMIs compared with those who received typical weight-loss advice. It is more common to treat whole families together. Teens in the behavior-modification program also reported having a better body image and healthier eating habits, suggesting that a teen-centered weight-loss approach may yield positive results. A school district in Missouri is using electronic monitors to track elementary-school students' physical activity, including heart rate and calories burned.
