- N.Y. considers rules to prevent sepsis deaths
Following the death of a 12-year-old boy, New York state has proposed regulations requiring that hospitals aggressively look for sepsis in patients to enable earlier treatment. New York could become the first state to adopt such rules. Early symptoms of sepsis can be difficult to distinguish from those of other, less serious maladies, but "[f]irst and foremost, they need to suspect sepsis," the most common cause of death in ICUs, said Dr. Mitchell M. - Cholesterol drug may help children with malaria
An international team of researchers found that adding the cholesterol drug lovastatin to malaria treatment chloroquine could prevent the late cognitive problems associated with cerebral malaria, according to a mouse model study published in the journal PLoS Pathogens. Lead researcher Dr. Guy Zimmerman of the University of Utah says lovastatin should be added to treatments for malaria. Voice of America

NBF accepting donations to support research grants
The National Blood Foundation, or NBF, is accepting donations to support research grants and other initiatives that benefit patients and donors. The research grants provide funding for one- or two-year projects in transfusion medicine and cellular therapies. Since 1985, the NBF has awarded more than $7.5 million in grants to 177 scientific investigators to advance the field. All donations are tax-deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law.
