- Oncology group updates breast cancer care guidelines
The American Society of Clinical Oncology released new guidelines for follow-up care for breast cancer survivors. The group urges providers to give cancer survivors a physical exam and history every three to six months during the first three years after primary therapy. The guidelines, which appeared online in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, urge providers not to conduct routine blood tests, biomarker studies or imaging tests besides mammograms when patients have no symptoms. - Cardiovascular polypill could boost adherence, lower costs
A pill that combines aspirin with a generic statin and two generic antihypertensive drugs increased adherence in a study of more than 2,000 people at risk for heart disease and already taking some type of medication. The patients given the polypill had greater reductions in blood pressure and cholesterol levels than those who bought the four drugs separately. The polypill was free to patients in the study group. - Study: Aliskiren does not show heart, kidney benefits in diabetes
Aliskiren-treated type 2 diabetes patients with comorbid kidney or heart disease did not show lower rates of heart attack, stroke or death from cardiovascular and renal disease-related causes at 2.5 years compared with the placebo group, a study indicated. Aliskiren treatment was linked to lower systolic and diastolic blood pressures and higher average decreases in urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio, but increased incidence of hyperkalemia and hypotension, compared with placebo therapy. The results were presented at Kidney Week 2012 and published in the New England Journal of Medicine. InternalMedicineNews.com

HHS awarded the University of Missouri Sinclair School of Nursing a four-year, $14.8 million grant to support a nursing home project that would put advanced practice registered nurses in 16 nursing facilities in St. Louis. The goal of the program is to lower hospitalizations for nursing home residents, enhance patient care and cut health care costs. - Analysis: Obama's win solidifies the Affordable Care Act
President Barack Obama's re-election has secured the survival of the Affordable Care Act, but challenges to the law remain, experts say. The Republican-controlled House of Representatives is expected to try to roll back the planned expansion of Medicaid benefits to more low-income adults, and Republican governors in some states have pledged not to implement the act's state health insurance exchanges. However, "there's sort of an immediate acceptance that this law will stay in place in some meaningful way," said Chris Jennings, who was an adviser to President Bill Clinton. Reuters
