- Study ties excess sitting to pericardial fat buildup
Researchers looked at CT scan data on 504 older Americans and found that prolonged sitting was significantly linked to build up of pericardial fat around the heart, even among those who exercise regularly. The more time a person spends sitting, the bigger the area of fat deposited around the heart. The study was presented at an American Heart Association meeting. HealthDay News

- Study links low vitamin D to arthritis knee pain in blacks
Data from questionnaires and pain tests completed by 94 adults revealed that black Americans with low vitamin D levels had more arthritis pain and greater pain sensitivity in their knees than did white patients, University of Florida researchers reported on the website of the journal Arthritis & Rheumatism. They said that even though the study was done in a sunny locale, low vitamin D levels were common among black and white participants but were more pronounced in blacks. Medscape (free registration)

- Study links statins to reduced cancer-related deaths
Cancer patients receiving statins, a class of cholesterol-lowering drugs, were 15% less likely to die of cancer or of other causes than those who weren't taking the medications, according to a Danish study published in the New England Journal of Medicine. "Statin use in patients with cancer is associated with reduced cancer-related mortality," researchers said. "Our hypothesis is that by reducing cholesterol, you steal cholesterol from the proliferating cancer cells ... improving survival," lead researcher Stig Bojesen said. Reuters

- Statins may reduce heart, vascular risk in diabetes, study finds
Statin therapy may help curb the risk of major vascular events in diabetes patients, an analysis in The Lancet found. Reductions in low-density lipoprotein levels were associated with reductions in all-cause mortality, major vascular events and vascular death in diabetes patients, regardless of their history of vascular disease. - Study compares GLP-1 receptor agonists
Both liraglutide and exenatide reduced blood glucose levels in a study involving more than 900 patients with type 2 diabetes, researchers report in The Lancet.
Patients getting daily injections of liraglutide lost slightly more weight but also had somewhat higher rates of side effects than those getting weekly exenatide injections. The primary difference between the two glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists is the frequency and complexity of the injections, said endocrinologist Spyros Mezitis. HealthDay News

- Survey: More seniors express confidence in Medicare
Extend Health's recent survey shows that out of 1,140 seniors, 74% are "very" or "somewhat" confident on Medicare being present throughout their lives. This is a higher result compared to a survey three months before, where only 61% of seniors expressed their confidence in Medicare. Extend Health founder and Towers Watson managing director for exchange solutions, Bryce Williams said that, "Results from the current survey represent the sharpest increase in seniors’ confidence in Medicare... a reflection perhaps of both presidential candidates’ strong messages that they are determined to protect Medicare for this generation of seniors." - Governors, legislatures weigh how to proceed with exchanges
Governors in Texas, Florida and elsewhere have declined to set up state-run insurance exchanges under the Affordable Care Act, Missouri voters passed a ballot measure prohibiting the state from doing so without the Legislature's approval and some states are considering running their exchanges in partnership with the federal government. Officials in other states, such as New Jersey and Virginia, have laid the groundwork for insurance exchanges but were waiting to announce plans until after the election. Leaders of 11 states and Washington, D.C., said they will expand their Medicaid programs, six said they won't, and some are negotiating with HHS on the scope of expansion. Yahoo/The Associated Press
