  • IRFA: Iowa generated 3.7 billion gallons of ethanol in 2012
The Iowa Renewable Fuels Association found that Iowa's 41 plants generated 3.7 billion gallons of ethanol in 2012, maintaining last year's rate despite this year's drought. "Due to Iowa's incredible farmers, the state weathered the drought better than most. Iowa was fortunate not to have an ethanol plant shut down in 2012. ... In the end, we held steady, but everyone is praying for rain and a trend-line corn yield in 2013 to really jump-start the industry," said IRFA Executive Director Monte Shaw. • Research on cellulose synthesis may lead to better biofuel production
Researchers at the University of Virginia have uncovered how plant cells produce cellulose fibers, a finding that could lead to more efficient bio-ethanol production. The study mapped out the structure of the enzyme that manufactures cellulose to reveal a snapshot of cellulose synthesis by plants. "Understanding how cellulose microfibrils are being formed might allow us to design/engineer plants with optimized cell walls for biofuel production," one of the researchers said.
