- AWEA: Texas economy, environment has benefited from wind
An oil-industry-funded report makes false allegations against wind power while overlooking its benefits to Texas' economy and air quality, writes Michael Goggin, manager of transmission policy for the American Wind Energy Association, in a letter to the editor. Wind power helps Texas save "around $1 billion each year (on average $10/month per household) by displacing fuel use at the most expensive, least efficient power plants. Last year, the wind industry employed more than 6,000 Texans, made around $115 million in property tax payments and paid local landowners $31 million in lease payments," Goggin states. - PTC uncertainty is putting thousands out of work, governors say
The "needless uncertainty" caused by Congress' inaction on the extension of the wind-energy Production Tax Credit "has already cost thousands of jobs and will cause future wind energy development to come to a grinding halt," write Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad and Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber, chairman and vice chairman, respectively, of the Governors’ Wind Energy Coalition. "By providing wind energy companies with the financial certainty necessary to secure the required private capital to begin developing projects, the PTC has been an important part of the growth in America's wind energy sector," Branstad and Kitzhaber note.
