- ASCERT registry analysis considers revascularization options for patients with multivessel CAD
An analysis of patient data captured in the NCDR-STS-CMS databases and presented at the American College of Cardiology annual meeting favored bypass surgery over angioplasty at four years. Physicians point out that the study overlooked important factors in the analysis. "A major flaw in ASCERT was that it compared apples to oranges. It looked at a specific subset of very sick, older patients, and it did not take into account a variety of factors that could have affected these data," said SCAI President Dr. Christopher White in a statement. "PCI is not only a safe and effective treatment option for patients, it often is the only treatment available to patients too sick or too frail to have open heart surgery." - CCTA can be used to evaluate risk of heart attack
Coronary CT angiography can effectively rule out the chance of heart attack in many emergency department patients who report chest pain, according to two studies reported at the American College of Cardiology annual meeting. "We have spent the past 30 years trying to find a simple test that will tell patients, right now, 'It's not your heart,'" said Dr. Judd Hollander, senior researcher on one of the studies. Researchers found the procedure cut time spent in the hospital and improved detection of heart trouble without compromising safety. The Philadelphia Inquirer

- Test can help identify antiplatelet risks
A simple bedside test can help determine risk factors for cardiac stent patients from antiplatelet therapy, according to a University of Ottawa study. A cheek swab test can identify the CYP2C19*2 genotype, giving practitioners additional knowledge to prevent adverse events. MedGadget.com
