- Verizon revenues exceed estimates on data, contracts
Verizon Communications increased revenues by 5.7% in the fourth quarter, beyond analysts' estimates, as wireless sales soared by 9.5% due partly to the introduction of shared-data pricing plans. The carrier had earlier said that postpaid subscribers -- those with contracts -- would grow by 2.1 million, almost double the gains of a year ago, with 87% of those coming from smartphones. Overall, Verizon added 2.24 million wireless customers, pushing its total to 98.2 million, a 6.6% increase from 2011. Overall, losses widened largely due to a one-time charge for pension funds and other restructuring as well as the fallout from Hurricane Sandy. The Verge

- Momentum fuels RIM on BB 10 apps, analyst optimism
Research In Motion continues to ride a resurgent wave the week before it is scheduled to introduce the BlackBerry 10 operating system. The company received 19,000 applications from developers over the weekend -- that's on top of the 15,000 the previous week -- which led RIM to extend its app submission deadline to Feb. 18 as part of a developer incentive program. Separately, a Byron Capital Markets analyst praised RIM and CEO Thorsten Heins for executing "very strongly" on the launch of BB 10 as well as for the company's strong balance sheet. The Verge

- Report: Capex will fall by 7% globally but rise in North America
Global carrier spending will decline by 7% this year to $98.6 billion although the outlook is brighter in North America, where investment will rise by 2.1%, ABI Research estimates. The firm cites a reluctance by some carriers to spend money among economic uneasiness and a maturing network, but in North America, accelerated spending on 4G infrastructure is expected to spark modest growth. ABI also predicts that global capital spending will rebound to a 6% increase in 2014 due to 4G investments. TelecomEngine.com
