  • ACA is no guarantee children will get dental care
The Affordable Care Act requires coverage of pediatric dental services under individual and small-group health insurance plans sold on exchanges or on the private market, but the requirement does not apply to large-group or grandfathered plans. Medicaid already covers pediatric dental care and more children are expected to be enrolled as a result of the ACA, but parents of many eligible children are unable to find a provider. Moreover, provisions in the law such as limits on consumer out-of-pocket expenses will lead to higher premiums, NADP Executive Director Evelyn Ireland points out. • Calif. accepting bids to offer dental, vision coverage on exchange: The California Health Benefit Exchange asked for notices of intent to bid to offer dental or vision coverage on the state's exchange by this week, but organizations have until March 1 to submit their bids, and contracts likely won't be signed until June 1. • Survey: Dentists are unsure about using EDR data for research
All dentists have computers in their offices, about three-quarters use computers clinically, and practitioners are increasingly using electronic dental records, according to research published in the Journal of the American Dental Association. But only 44.4% said they were willing to use electronic record data for quality improvement and research. "There is a lot of knowledge and wisdom in the data, and we need to find good ways to mine that," said researcher and dentist Titus Schleyer.
