- N.J. man recovers from necrotizing fasciitis
A 62-year-old man who became infected with necrotizing fasciitis after contaminated water washed over a blister on his foot nearly lost not only his leg but his life. Doctors treated the man, who has diabetes, with eight rounds of aggressive surgical debridement, antibiotics, rehydration, blood transfusions and skin grafts. The patient's organs failed twice during his 65-day treatment, requiring dialysis and a ventilator to help him breathe. Asbury Park Press (Neptune-Asbury Park, N.J.)

- Report: Caterpillars responsible for skin rash outbreaks in Fla.
A CDC report found that caterpillars caused three outbreaks of skin rashes in Florida, affecting a total of 23 children in Tampa. Researchers said some children received unnecessary medications when the rashes were mistaken for chickenpox and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infection. The CDC added that schools and child care facilities should know the risks of developing skin rashes from contact with caterpillars. MyHealthNewsDaily.com

- Clamping device can halt bleeding in 3 seconds
A surgeon in Canada has designed a clamping device that can halt bleeding from wounds in three seconds. During testing in simulations, the device allowed the user to quickly lift the skin and clamp with even pressure, and it can remain in place for hours. - Doctors' associations worry about overlap in CMS deadlines
The American Medical Association, together with other physician specialty associations, warned the CMS about the overlap in the ICD-10 transition schedule and the deadlines of other initiatives, including the physician quality reporting system and EHRs. "We urge CMS to re-evaluate the penalty timelines associated with these programs and examine the administrative and financial burdens and intersection of these various federal regulatory programs," the associations stated in a letter sent to Marilyn Tavenner, acting administrator of the CMS.
