  • Airline mergers help keep industry stable, Spirit CEO says
Ben Baldanza, CEO of Spirit Airlines, says he welcomes the US Airways-American Airlines merger as a stabilizing force in the industry. The European Low Fares Airline Association is planning a legal challenge against the partial suspension of the European Union emissions-trading scheme. • A4A: Travelers deserve action from Congress, Obama on sequestration
Lawmakers are working to stave off the $85 billion in cuts that will take place March 1 if sequestration isn't stopped. The weight of the reductions might not be felt immediately, and airline industry and labor unions are "being careful not to engage in the Washington blame game," Politico says. A4A spokeswoman Jean Medina says travelers deserve action from the Obama administration and Congress. If sequestration is not averted, "Congress and the president must find a way to amend the indiscriminate nature of the cuts so they don't impact our air transportation system, which is a major driver of the economy," Medina said. • How doodling could lead to better hires
Letting job candidates' individual personalities shine helps ensure you're hiring someone who fits your company culture. At Carrot Creative, for example, applicants are asked to write a haiku, doodle and play with refrigerator magnets. The exercise shows how an applicant might fit with the social media agency's playful culture. Another smart move is to show applicants your true personality in the interview and see how they respond, says Jonathan Basker, vice president of people at Betaworks.
