Setting the Example
  • Janitors have vital role in company sustainability efforts
Companies can leverage the abilities of janitors when launching a green cleaning program. Cleaning crews can monitor energy and water use, which can be be valuable for an organization's eco-friendly efforts. "Sometimes we forget that the janitors can do things other than cleaning that can help the owners and managers meet their broader sustainability objectives," said Steve Ashkin, CEO of Sustainability Dashboard Tools. Creating Accountability
  • New tool helps firms develop green plastics
A team of 23 chemists and biologists has developed a tool that predicts whether a given chemical is likely to have an adverse effect on human users. That could help ensure that plastics such as bisphenol A aren't replaced with potentially harmful but untested substitutes. "If I was making a new product and I wanted to be really sure it wasn't going to accidentally interfere with people's hormones, this is a tool that allows me to do that type of testing," says Karen Peabody O'Brien, executive director of Advancing Green Chemistry. • From White to Green: Domtar Creates New Model for Responsible Forest Management with the FSC
Domtar recently announced an unprecedented two-year partnership process that saw 55 landowners achieve Forest Stewardship Council group certification. This new partnership in the Texarkana area brings the FSC certification to 70,000 new acres of forestland. This is just one step toward Domtar's ambitious goal of eventually procuring 100% of its fiber from sources that are certified to the FSC standard. "We have raised the bar for private land certification in the South, and we look forward to seeing the model built in Ashdown being replicated and expanded on throughout our mill system," said Lewis Fix, Domtar's vice president of pulp sales. 3BL Media

The Responsible Leader
  • CEOs see energy, materials pricing as big risk factors
More than half of the world's business leaders now see increasing energy and raw-material costs as a limiting factor for growth, according to a PricewaterhouseCoopers global survey of CEOs. "With a much more challenging environment for growth, businesses can ill afford price shocks in energy and resource costs for business, so it's no surprise they are rising up the list of threats to their future growth prospects," said PwC sustainability expert Richard Gledhill. So far, the technology has kept up with climate change. ... In fact, it's probably improving faster than climate change is happening."
