- China to hold on to domestic soybean output
China will begin storing domestic output of soybeans through the end of April in an attempt to increase farmers' incomes amid a decline in production. "The reliance on imports means China has lost pricing power over soybeans in the international market. China should continue to encourage soybean producers and at the same time develop alternatives such as growing corn and palm trees to ensure the grease supply," said consultant Ma Wenfeng. - BASF bids for another omega-3 company
BASF seeks to buy omega-3 company Pronova, which would be its third acquisition in the field since 2010. "A successful Pronova acquisition will enable both units to optimally combine their raw material purchasing, even at intermediate steps along the value chain. The company offers the entire range from low to medium to super high concentrated omega-3 fatty acids," said Andreas Bais of BASF. NutraIngredients

- Staple crop genomics studies share $25.5M in grants
The U.K. Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council awarded grants totaling $25.5 million to 11 international research projects that aim to enhance staple crops using genomic technologies. The projects will seek to identify genes and markers that could be used to improve drought resistance, disease and pest tolerance, environmental adaptation, and yields by examining the genomes of beans, wheat, rice and other crops essential in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. The grant program is funded by BBSRC, the U.K. Department for International Development, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and India's Ministry of Science. - Review of studies suggests postpartum benefits from omega-3s
Science is increasingly finding evidence of the benefit of omega-3 fatty acids to women at risk of developing postpartum depression. "The literature shows that there could be a link between pregnancy, omega-3 and the chemical reaction that enables serotonin, a mood regulator, to be released into our brains," said Gabriel Shapiro, who led the review of 75 studies. CFS: 3-MCPD esters unlikely to be toxic
Fatty acid esters of 3-monochloropropane-1,2-diol in food are unlikely to have major toxic effects on local consumers, according to a study by Hong Kong's Centre for Food Safety. Many questions remain about 3-MCPD, a potentially carcinogenic process contaminant in its esterified form, concerning its toxicology, its metabolic fate in the human gut, and methods of analysis. "The Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives established a provisional maximum tolerable daily intake (PMTDI) of 2 μg/kg body weight/day for 3-MCPD," a CFS statement noted." Assuming that 100 percent of the toxic 3-MCPD was released from its fatty acid esters by hydrolysis in the digestive system, the dietary exposures to 3-MCPD for average and high adult consumers were only 10% and 26% of the PMTDI, respectively, which were way below the PMTDI." The CFS report, a news release, and a PowerPoint presentation based on the report are available online.
