  • Pa. school district uses in-service day for STEM summit
Teachers in the Norwin School District in Pennsylvania will gather in February with representatives from area businesses -- as well as international corporations such as Google and Westinghouse -- for a second annual summit devoted to science, technology, engineering and math education. Educators from across the state also are expected to attend the event to learn more about hands-on lessons and projects they can provide their students. This expanded summit is being organized through a partnership with Asset STEM Education, a Pittsburgh-based nonprofit group funded by Bayer. Norwin Star (Pittsburgh) (11/28) Email this Story
  • Ala. fifth-graders will get trip to Space Camp
The Huntsville Elks Lodge in Alabama surprised Chaffee Elementary School fifth-graders this week by announcing that the students would get a free trip to a weeklong Space Camp, run by the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville. The school's fifth-grade teaching team has been focusing hard on science and technology education, says Chaffee principal Sanchella Graham. AL.com (Alabama) (11/27) Email this Story
  • Kan. education board to review report on science instruction
The Kansas State Board of Education next month is expected to review a report on elementary schools not teaching science yet still giving students grades in the subject. The emphasis on reading and math test scores to comply with federal regulations has left little time for science instruction, according to the report, which the board received at its Nov. 13 meeting. "When you think about it, you understand it's due to the emphasis that's been put on the (reading and math) assessments," board member Janet Waugh said. Lawrence Journal-World (Kansas) (11/25)

  • Official: University research means jobs, economic impact
Research at Oregon State University is about much more than students and professors working in isolation on subjects that have little effect on the rest of Oregon's population, says Richard Spinrad, the school's vice president for research. Speaking to local business leaders Wednesday, Spinrad explained how ongoing research will affect everything from agriculture and forestry to home-building and smartphone technology. "We don't usually like to talk about creating jobs through research, but we do know that there are hundreds of jobs that didn't exist without research at Oregon State," Spinrad said. • More civil engineering job openings, especially in big cities
Advertised job openings for civil engineers are increasing, particularly in big cities, such as Los Angeles, New York, Houston, Washington, D.C., and Denver, according to WANTED Analytics. More than 22,000 jobs were listed for the profession in the past three months, a 16% increase over the same period in 2011. Engineers with CAD, project and construction management and other related skills are in great demand. GoStructural.com (11/28)
  • Tech jobs seen as expanding amid national health care changes
As federal legislation affecting health care and insurance takes effect, the need for skilled IT professionals to help track patient data and other vital information is expected to continue growing steadily, research suggests. "You're at an early growth curve," said John Tricas, who recently took a position helping improve electronic record-keeping at a North Carolina health care company. "This is the ground level. You can kind of make your own opportunities." San Francisco Chronicle (11/28) Email this Story
