- Study: Many drug labels lack safety and dosing data for children
Many drug labels lack information on safety and proper dosage for children, according to an FDA study of 560 medications for diseases ranging from allergies to high blood pressure. "If you give a child a therapy and it doesn't work, it's hard to tell if your dose wasn't ideal or it's just because the drug didn't work," said Dr. Eric Lavonas, from the Rocky Mountain Poison and Drug Center in Denver. "Likewise, if a child has a side effect, it's hard to tell if that's a side effect of the drug or if the child wouldn't have had that side effect if the right dose was given." The findings were published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Reuters

- Group calls for changes in meaningful use reporting
The Electronic Health Records Association has called on the federal government to modify the timetable for eligible health care providers to report stage 2 meaningful use compliance. Using a three-month or six-month reporting period instead of a full year will give physicians and hospitals more time to become familiar with their new systems and make needed changes, the association said.
