- Hawaii tops Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index for 4th year
The annual Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index released Wednesday ranks Hawaii as No. 1 for the fourth year in a row and West Virginia last. States were rated on overall well-being, physical health, job satisfaction and other criteria. Data showed 60% of Hawaii residents surveyed said they were thriving, compared with 45% of people in West Virginia. USA Today

- Report finds declining number of black M.D.s
A report by the Association of American Medical Colleges revealed only 2.5% of male medical student applicants in 2011 were blacks, a slight decrease from 2002. Researchers also found the number of new male doctors who were black decreased to 2.4% in 2011, despite a 3% increase in the number of black male medical school graduates in the last decade. - Patients' costs for ED care vary widely
U.S. researchers looked at more than 8,000 emergency department visits and found that of the 10 most common conditions, urinary tract infections had the greatest range of out-of-pocket patient charges, from $50 to as much as $73,000, followed by kidney stones and intestinal infections.
