  • IAB study calls for better Internet research
Small samples and weak response rates, not to mention "quasi-experimental" approaches, are among the problems plaguing online brand research, according to an Interactive Advertising Bureau report. The study was authored by Nielsen's former chief research methodologist, Dr. Paul Lavrakas. IAB plans to create a task force to educate advertisers about the findings and will develop a list of best practices to help improve brand research online, it announced. • Web data isn't as personal as you think
The Wall Street Journal only got part of the picture in its reporting on how websites track user data, Erin Jo Richey argues. "Rarely do I feel like I have pieced together enough details to be considered a spy," she writes. In general, it's possible to see where visitors are located, what kind of computer they use and what kinds of sites they visit, but the information is aggregated and anonymous, she points out. Data such as names and e-mail addresses has to be given by the user, she writes. Advertising Age (tiered subscription model)/DigitalNext blog (8/5) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • Lawmakers query Web companies about user data
Reps. Ed Markey, D-Mass., and Joe Barton, R-Texas, have issued letters to 15 Web companies, including AOL, Yahoo! and MSN, to express concern about online advertising's effect on consumer privacy. The lawmakers singled out targeted marketing practices that rely on Web tracking and asked companies to reveal how the information was being used as well as the revenues it generates. • Google, Verizon fault Times for mobile pay report
Google and Verizon Wireless issued statements Thursday slamming a report by the New York Times that claimed the companies were planning a pay-tier system for mobile Internet. Google is dedicated to maintaining "an open Internet," it tweeted. "To suggest this is a business arrangement between our companies is entirely incorrect," blogged Verizon's media director, David Fish. • EBay rewards shoppers with "bucks"
EBay's new rewards program pays credits dubbed "eBay bucks," which customers can spend on other purchases. Registered users will get "bucks" worth 2% of the total on qualified purchases, and will have 30 days from the time they receive quarterly "eBay bucks" statements to spend their rewards. • Tesco to launch mobile shopping app
Tesco is set to roll out its first mobile shopping application on Nokia's Ovi Store next week. The U.K.'s largest retailer bypassed Apple's iPhone for its first effort, focusing instead on making the shopping feature accessible to its core customers -- busy moms who tend to use other mobile devices. • Marketers are thinking bigger with new mobile ads
Larger and more immersive, rich-media ads have become marketers' latest weapons to attract companies reluctant to embrace cell phones because consumers were not paying attention to banners and other more discreet forms of advertising. To hold audiences' attention, marketers are turning to spots featuring videos and games that often fill entire screens. Initial results show the plan might be working. • Don't say goodbye to an internship without these tips
As your internship draws to a close, take steps to solidify your working relationships and set the stage for the next phase in your career plan, Alison Green writes. Some things to do include getting feedback from your manager and asking for any advice from co-workers about your career choices. "[A] lot of people won't offer this kind of help if you don't explicitly ask for it," she writes. U.S. News & World Report/On Careers blog (8/2) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
