- How mobile could beat TV
Paul Gelb, Mobile Practice Lead of Razorfish, is predicting mobile ad spending will eventually outpace TV. In an interview with Adweek, Gelb said mobile represents mass media in the truest sense and suggested the shift in ad dollars may not be far off. "If you'd predicted [when the iPhone launched] that smartphones could outsell PCs and that people would spend an hour a day on their phones, no one would have believed you," Gelb said. Adweek

- Are more TV dollars going digital?
Donnie Williams, EVP and chief digital officer for Horizon Media, said some clients shifted an estimated 8% to 13% more of their media budgets toward premium digital platforms during the recent upfront. - Google, others deploy major funding to find next tech hit
Google and other big tech companies are plunging back into the venture capital game, seeking the formula to the next big thing with investments totaling $583 million in just the first quarter of this year. The problem is that startups by definition provide little data upon which to base large decisions. "Investing is being in a dark room and trying to find the way out," said Bill Maris, the managing partner of Google Ventures, which plans to deploy $200 million. - Marketers head to Facebook in droves
Facebook saw the number of paid brand advertising campaigns on its site increase 104% in the second quarter, compared to the first quarter, per research by TBG Digital, a London-based digital agency that specializes in Facebook marketing. TBG's second-quarter analysis identifies retailers as the quickest-growing marketing sector in Facebook ads, with finance and credit card campaigns coming in second in that regard. - Microsoft is said to step back from Hulu auction for now
Microsoft won't participate in the second round of bidding for Hulu, sources say, though the company may return later. Among the other companies that have shown interest in the streaming video provider are Google, Yahoo! and AT&T, as well as several others, the sources said. Bloomberg
