  • Apple increases R&D spending but falls short of rivals
    Apple shelled out $3.4 billion for research-and-development efforts during its most recent fiscal year, an increase of almost 40% from the previous fiscal year but a fraction of the $9.8 billion R&D budget of Microsoft. Apple said it "expects to make further investments in R&D to remain competitive" and is building a 300,000-square-foot research facility for its new headquarters in Cupertino, Calif., scheduled to be complete by 2015.
