  • Time to look at evidence of GM safety, report says
Genetically modified foods are largely misunderstood, and debate over their safety cannot occur without clearing up those misconceptions, EuropaBio said in a report. "GM technology is a confusing topic that needs to be explained better,” European Parliament member George Lyon said in the report. "This guide aims to look at the reality of crop science, explode some of the myths around GM and recognise the growing support from high-profile development and sustainability organisations; from the WHO to the Gates Foundation." In 2012, researchers at Wilmar’s Biotechnology R&D Center in Shanghai conducted a nationwide survey of bottled cooking oil, catering oil and oil-bearing processed food, to reveal the current trend of trans fatty acid content in foods within the Chinese market. Read about their methodology and results in the first free article from inform, the AOCS member magazine. Next, Gilles-Eric Séralini and co-workers suggested in a peer-reviewed article that Monsanto’s NK603 glyphosate-resistant corn was unsafe. Their work, they said, showed that rats fed NK603 had more and larger cancerous tumors and died earlier than controls. There followed not one but two opinions by the European Food Safety Authority and no fewer than 16 letters critiquing the study. Read about the uproar in this excerpt from inform’s Biotechnology News department. LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
