- Custom or prefab insoles lower peak pressure in diabetic neuropathy
Prefabricated insoles perform comparably to custom-made insoles in relieving peak plantar pressure and reducing foot ulcer risks in patients with diabetes-related neuropathy, a study of 119 patients showed. Prefabricated insoles are less expensive than custom-made insoles and should be considered where clinically appropriate, researchers wrote in the Journal of Foot and Ankle Research. - "Food clock" gene could help explain obesity, diabetes
Mice lacking the PKCγ gene did not adjust their circadian rhythms in response to meal time changes, while normal mice adjusted their "food clock" and woke up in accordance with new meal times, a study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found. The findings may help scientists understand the molecular mechanisms of diabetes, obesity and other metabolic disorders, researchers said. United Press International

- Primary care institutes may help alleviate doc shortage
U.S. hospitals in 2012 looked toward primary care institutes as one way to reduce the shortage of physicians. The Connecticut Institute for Primary Care Innovation opened in November and the California Advanced Primary Care Institute is scheduled to open in 2013. Hospitals also created affiliations with medical schools and increased residency slots and programs, including a new family medicine residency program at the University of Montana in Missoula. - Survey: Moms rely on peers for food information
Mothers rely more heavily on the opinions of bloggers and friends than on doctors or nutritionists for information about food and food-safety issues, according to a survey from Fleishman-Hillard and TheMotherhood.com.
