  • Custom or prefab insoles lower peak pressure in diabetic neuropathy
Prefabricated insoles perform comparably to custom-made insoles in relieving peak plantar pressure and reducing foot ulcer risks in patients with diabetes-related neuropathy, a study of 119 patients showed. Prefabricated insoles are less expensive than custom-made insoles and should be considered where clinically appropriate, researchers wrote in the Journal of Foot and Ankle Research. • "Food clock" gene could help explain obesity, diabetes
Mice lacking the PKCγ gene did not adjust their circadian rhythms in response to meal time changes, while normal mice adjusted their "food clock" and woke up in accordance with new meal times, a study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found. The findings may help scientists understand the molecular mechanisms of diabetes, obesity and other metabolic disorders, researchers said. • Medicare should adopt private-sector incentive strategies, GAO says
CMS should reward doctors for improving performance and meeting quality goals and should adjust payment more quickly in an effort to move Medicare from a fee-for-service system to one based on outcomes, a Government Accountability Office report suggests. The GAO recommends rewarding performance improvement based on nationally recognized standards rather than penalizing low quality. Mothers rely more heavily on the opinions of bloggers and friends than on doctors or nutritionists for information about food and food-safety issues, according to a survey from Fleishman-Hillard and TheMotherhood.com. The survey also found that moms plan to cut back on sugar, processed foods and soda in 2013 and that nearly 4 in 5 read food labels.
