TSA may re-compete screening technologies integration contract
The Transportation Security Administration has taken steps indicating a possible plan to re-compete a previously awarded contract. Man arrested for trying to smuggle gun at N.C. airport
On Nov. 27, Bakari Blunt, 18, from Charleston, S.C., attempted to bring a gun on board a flight from Charlotte-Douglas International Airport in North Carolina. The man was arrested and set to appear in court on Jan. 18. The Charlotte Observer (N.C.) (12/5)

Fiscal cliff threatens border protection funding, some say
If Congress and the president don't reach a deal to avoid going over the "fiscal cliff," U.S. border security could take a hit from automatic spending cuts. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said not reaching an agreement would cut more than $3 billion in spending that would "entail rolling back significant progress" in border protection. Group forecasts 3.6 billion global airline passengers by 2016
The global airline industry will carry about 3.6 billion passengers by 2016, the International Air Transport Association predicts. The group predicts that international air traffic to the U.S. will rise 4.3% per year through 2016, while domestic travel will increase 2.6% each year. World Travel: 1 billion people will travel internationally in 2012
The World Travel & Tourism Council predicts that 1 billion travelers will cross an international boundary while on a leisure trip in 2012. The group attributes the increase in part to an increasing desire for travel to emerging countries such as China. "There is an inexorable growth in the number of people who want to travel around the world," said David Scowsill, the council's president and CEO. Reuters (12/6)

Bombardier lands jet deal with Delta worth up to $3.2 billion
Delta Air Lines has placed a firm order for 40 jets with an option to buy 30 more from Bombardier. The planes are part of Delta's transition to bigger regional jets. With new routes coming, Hawaiian will add 240 flight attendants
Hawaiian Airlines will interview around 2,600 applicants for 240 new flight-attendant positions, a hiring wave accompanying its recently announced move into Asia and several other new markets. FCC urges FAA to widen in-flight mobile device use
Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski sent a letter Thursday to the Federal Aviation Administration encouraging it to expand the permitted use of electronic devices on flights. Registration now open for the 12th Annual AAAE Aviation Security Summit
Registration is now open for the 12th Annual AAAE/TSA/DHS Aviation Security Summit taking place Dec. 10 and 11 at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City in Arlington, Va. The 12th Annual AAAE/TSA/DHS Aviation Security Summit will continue the tradition of AAAE and federal aviation security policymakers coming together at a joint summit to review the complex issues surrounding aviation security today. Senior TSA and DHS officials, as well as representatives from other federal agencies and Congress, will speak at the summit.
