    A coalition of public safety groups including NENA and the NG 9-1-1 Institute recently honored citizen heroes whose actions spotlighted the importance of 9-1-1 communications. Honorees included a 10-year-old girl who translated a dispatcher's CPR instructions to her mother when her young cousin stopped breathing.   • Study: 9-1-1 dispatchers can experience PTSD after traumatic calls
    A study that included 171 emergency dispatchers found they experienced stress in reaction to 32% of difficult calls, with 3.5% reporting symptoms that would qualify their condition as post-traumatic stress disorder. Michelle Lilly of Northern Illinois University said the study in the Journal of Traumatic Stress is the first to focus on dispatchers.   • Ohio landline telephone bill could affect 9-1-1 callers
    Ohio officials are studying how a state bill that would remove requirements that telephone companies offer landline service might affect 9-1-1 emergency calls. Most counties have upgraded 9-1-1 systems to handle cellphone calls, but Mike Combs of Clark County says often the precise location of the phone is not available, which could mean first responders would be unable to locate someone who needs help.     Vice President Joe Biden criticized elected officials who vote against law enforcement funding requests that would force public-safety layoffs.   • Backhaul is significant issue in creating broadband network
    Public safety jurisdictions with 700 MHz broadband waivers to build part of the new nationwide network have been surprised by the amount of backhaul needed to send a data packet within an LTE network, forcing some to revamp microwave systems tapped to do it.
