- Many service members are swamped with student loans, Panetta warns
More than 40% of service members hold student loan debt, making it one of the top sources of anxiety for troops, in some cases adding more stress than war itself, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said Thursday. Part of the problem is that service members aren't taking advantage of laws meant to help them manage their student debt. "Because of their sacrifice, it should be easier, not tougher, for service members to be able to pay off their college debt," Panetta said. Reuters

- McKeon: Shelved weapons system would save lives in Afghanistan
House Armed Services Committee chairman Buck McKeon, R-Calif., is urging the White House and Pentagon to re-examine a decision to shelve the Counter-Rocket, Artillery and Mortar system intended for use in Afghanistan. - Corporate programs for hiring veterans lead to divisions
The processes for hiring veterans at many companies, including General Electric and Booz Allen Hamilton, involve separating applications submitted by commissioned officers from those submitted by enlisted veterans, Shaun So writes. "Yes, there are distinct differences between enlisted and officer leadership roles," he writes, but "I don't think that those differences should prevent an enlisted veteran candidate from future corporate leadership training opportunities."
