- Mo. plan includes common evaluations for student teachers
Missouri officials are working to set a new standard for the state's teaching colleges, while simultaneous work is under way to raise the bar for teachers. A Missouri Board of Education plan approved last month will raise the grade-point average requirement for student teachers, require more standardized evaluations for student teachers and other steps. There are 39 teacher-preparation programs statewide -- each with their own method for evaluating student teachers. St. Louis Post-Dispatch

- Are schools meeting students' technology expectations?
School districts nationwide are struggling to keep up with ever-changing technology and with students' increasingly high expectations for classroom tech. Gene Carter, executive director and CEO of ASCD, said students expect the same technology in school that they have access to outside of school and at home. "One of the big criticisms of many schools is that they are not authentic learning institutions because what happens outside the schoolhouse differs significantly from what students are exposed to," he said. - Ill. school staff receive incentive to model healthy living
Officials in an Ill. district say that teachers and other school staff should be models for healthy living, which they encourage among students. To help accomplish that goal, the city council has agreed to offer in-district rates at its fitness center to school staff that live outside of the district. The district also launched a Fit Together Program this year, in which school staff earn points for eating healthy and exercising and are eligible for prizes. - How does IB fit into the common core?
San Diego-area educators trained to teach the International Baccalaureate program say its inquiry-style lessons share some of the rigorous requirements of Common Core State Standards. "It's the exact same intent, and in some cases the same wording as well," said David Weber, an IB math teacher at the Preuss School-University of California, San Diego, in La Jolla, Calif. However, some IB proponents say they worry the common core's focus on standardized tests might diminish IB's use of portfolio assessments to gauge student learning.
