- Dollar General offers 10% off big toy buys
Dollar General said Thursday it will take 10% off toy purchases of $75 or more, as part of a holiday promotion that starts Saturday and runs through Christmas Eve. The discount chain has also added more brand name toys from Mattel, Disney and Hasbro, with most of the offerings selling for between $3 and $20. The Wall Street Journal

- Wal-Mart maps Japan expansion as thrift grows
The rise in the ranks of the working poor and retirees in Japan has Wal-Mart eyeing its first expansions there since 2008, with 22 new stores planned in the next two years. The US retailer operates 368 Japan stores under the Seiyu banner, a brand that began as a partner and was acquired outright by Wal-Mart four years ago. The Wall Street Journal

- Finish Line stores get merry with mobile checkout
Finish Line is outfitting staffers in its 638 stores with 3,200 iPod touches in time to offer holiday crowds the option of mobile checkout. The gadgets let associates process payments from anywhere in the store, a practice that drove higher sales in an earlier test, Finish Line said. MobileCommerceDaily.com

- Groups fight for records in Visa lawsuit
A lawyer for trade associations fighting a proposed $7.25 billion settlement with Visa and MasterCard over swipe fees is pushing for access to all the records in the case, including documents Visa calls "highly confidential." Critics of the settlement say it does nothing to solve the problem of high swipe fees. “Merchants and their customers are actually worse off than if they had gone to trial and lost,” said NRF general counsel Mallory Duncan. - Starbucks aims to make serious Nordic strides
Starbucks will open its first store in Oslo, Norway, next year, launching an expansion plan for the Nordic region of Europe, where coffee consumption is high but so are labor costs.
