  • Why hiring an IT consultant requires due diligence
Hiring an IT consultant can be a good way for a company to temporarily bolster its workforce for project-specific tasks, but it's not as simple as just adding a desk, experts say. To avoid legal issues, the first steps are to determine whether a consultant is an employee or an independent contractor and to draft clear contract language that protects a firm's intellectual property and trade secrets. Just as important is ensuring your consultant isn't going to leave his or her post without making sure full-time employees are up to speed on what was accomplished, this article notes. • Are U.S. cybervulnerabilities overhyped?
The U.S. government is using exaggerated claims to propel the nation toward cyberpreparedness, say some security experts, who insist things aren't as bad as the White House would have us think. Cybersecurity guru Bruce Schneier says overblown threats of a "Cyber Pearl Harbor" are a good way to generate money for federal agencies and contracts, but they also promulgate unnecessary fear. Gary McGraw of Cigital says the government has been in war-fighting mode for so long that it is unable to see cybersecurity for what it is -- a multi-pronged and often tedious effort that isn't as "sexy" as battle.
