- Education-technology trends to watch in 2012
In this article, academics and instructional technologists reveal five education-technology trends to watch in 2012. Among them are an increase in mobile learning, plus an increase in the number of students learning online. Experts also foresee greater use of social-networking websites, such as Twitter and Facebook, in the classroom, and the adoption of more learning-management systems. They also expect more teachers to lead one-to-one computing initiatives in their schools. T.H.E. Journal

- Is technology reinventing education?
In California, some are describing a reinvention of schooling as more students engage in some form of digital learning. In Modesto-area schools, high-school math students maintain a Facebook page, a teacher uses Twitter for assignments and other teachers regularly use iPad tablet computers in classroom lessons. "[Technology] puts resources in the hands of parents that they can use to help their kids and it delivers timely information about grades, attendance and school activities," said John Scott, Modesto City School's director of information and technology. - Lawmakers are losing momentum on cybersecurity legislation
The Senate is unlikely to meet a Feb. 17 deadline to begin floor debate on a proposed cybersecurity bill, said Majority Leader Harry Reid. The legislation -- which would give the Department of Homeland Security more discretion to set cybersecurity guidelines for critical infrastructure -- has sparked a backlash from the private sector, prompting a letter from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce urging lawmakers to hold off on acting on the measure and citing the bill's potential cost to businesses. - Ariz. considers increased funding for online schools
Online schools in Arizona would be eligible for additional funding if students perform well on state tests under a proposal being considered by lawmakers. The proposal is one of several being considered this year that would increase accountability -- and, potentially, funding -- for online schools. One change would allow online schools to be funded at the same level as traditional schools, if students can demonstrate mastery of the subject. The Arizona Republic (Phoenix)

- How much funding should schools take from private entities?
In some states, including Iowa, school districts increasingly are using money from private donations and corporate partnerships to make up for a shortage of public funds. The trend, however, has led to a disparity in school funding and calls into question the nature of public schooling. "It starts to become a question of are these public entities, are these semipublic or quasi-private entities as we start to move the needle more toward these outside funding sources," said Jason Glass, director of the Iowa Department of Education.
