- Observational units save money for hospitals, study finds
Observation units could save the average hospital $4.6 million and lower health care costs by $3.1 billion per year nationally, according to a study to be published in the journal Health Affairs. About 1 in 3 hospitals have the units, which reduce admissions from the emergency department, according to the study. Greater use of the units "should be a model for acute care redesign to increase value in the U.S. health care system," Harvard Medical School's Dr. Christopher W. Baugh said. Nurse.com
