  • Study: Gum chewing linked with lower stress
Three studies funded by the Wrigley Science Institute and published in the journal Appetite suggest that chewing gum could decrease stress and boost positive feelings. The first two studies, conducted by scientists from Cardiff University, surveyed university workers and students, and showed a correlation between gum chewing, lower stress and higher productivity. But a third study of the relationship between gum chewing and cortisol levels, directed by Gemma Gray of Coventry University, found that gum chewing reduced participants' perception of stress but actually raised levels of the stress-producing hormone.
