Despite losses earlier in the year, Southwest Airlines posted a $16 million profit, equivalent to 2 cents per share. • American Airlines plans to hire 1,500 flight attendants
American Airlines plans to hire 1,500 flight attendants in the next year, with openings posted next month and new hires to start training in January. The additional employees will meet the company's new needs after the success of the buyout program offered to staff earlier year. "For the first time in over a decade, American is seeking to add more than 1,500 new flight attendants who we believe will bring new perspectives to the airline," said Lauri Curtis, the airline's vice president for flight service. • Hawaiian Airlines will expand service with turboprops
Hawaiian Holdings Inc. has made good on its announcement earlier this year to purchase turboprops to provide service to smaller airports around the state's islands. Hawaiian Airline has received one ATR 42 twin-turboprop plane to begin service to small airports in Molokai and Lanai next year, and a second ATR is slated for delivery in November. • Travel taxes consume vacation dollars
Travel is one of the easiest things to tax for some cash-strapped U.S. cities and money usually goes into general coffers rather than funding facilities for travelers. The federal government has gotten into the game too: There are up to 17 potential taxes levied on airline tickets, this feature says. • Report offers insight into advanced-biofuel investment trends
Advanced-biofuel projects using feedstocks such as jatropha and algae received the most investments in 2009, but funding for jatropha is waning because of its poor performance in field trials, according to a report from energy-market research firm NRG Expert. Moving forward, firms that integrate biochemicals and other high-value products in their operations will gain more investors than those that focus solely on biofuels, the report adds. Meanwhile, rising oil prices and new biofuel mandates worldwide will boost biofuels' competitiveness and market share, the report states.
