  • Fla. court upholds confidentiality in malpractice suits
The Florida Supreme Court upheld a state law prohibiting defendants' lawyers in malpractice lawsuits from meeting privately with plaintiffs' other doctors or dentists, even if only to discuss non-privileged matters. The judgment addresses a case in which a lawyer hired by dentist's insurance company sought to discuss aspects of a case with an oral surgeon who subsequently treated the plaintiff. The oral surgeon was also covered by the insurer. The Daily Record (Baltimore)/The Associated Press (12/23) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • More states consider licensing mid-level dental care providers
Policymakers in California, Kansas, Maine and New Hampshire are considering following Minnesota's lead in licensing specially trained dental hygienists to fill cavities, extract primary teeth and install crowns and spacers. Advocates say mid-level providers or dental therapists can help increase access to dental care and free up busy dentists to provide more complex services. Opponents, including the ADA, say there is no lack of providers. USA Today (12/23) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • Baby boomers increasingly seek orthodontic care
Orthodontists and dentists say they are treating more baby boomers who want to correct issues such as overcrowding and receding gums lines. Rear molars tend to move forward over time, crowding front teeth, and teeth also tend to discolor, crowns leak and bridgework loosens as people age, dentist John Savko says. Clear braces and the promise of looking younger make orthodontia more attractive to baby boomers, says orthodontist Rael Bernstein. The Press Democrat (Santa Rosa, Calif.)
