  • Dog-bite claims have insurance firms growling
The cost of homeowner-insurance claims for dog bites has increased 48% since 2003, to nearly $479 million in 2011, even though the number of bites has not increased. The higher payouts are because more people own dogs, and because more parents opt for plastic surgery for a child bitten by a dog, said Bob Skow, CEO of the Independent Insurance Agents of Iowa. • Age brings complications for pet owners
APPA President Bob Vetere said baby boomers are particularly affectionate with their pets because "the kids left home and now we're looking to hover over something else." But as the group ages, the relationship becomes more complicated, both because older pet owners desire flexibility in their own lives, and because they are worried about what will happen to their pets after they die.
