  • Green roofs to help buildings of NYC firm become sustainable
More than an acre of green roofs will be installed on eight buildings owned by the Durst Organization in New York City. The real-estate company plans to invest between $750,000 and $1 million to install the roofs as a way to save energy and benefit the environment. "Beyond diverting storm water runoff, they provide cooling by absorbing sunlight that would otherwise be converted to heat energy, and they can capture pollutants and filter noxious gases," said Helena Durst, the company's vice president. • Calif. schools to get $2.5B for energy-efficiency upgrades
On July 1, $450 million will be available for energy-efficiency upgrades and clean-energy projects at California schools. During the four following years, $550 million will be available annually. Funding is a result of the passage of Proposition 39. An average retrofit could cut 30% off energy costs and save a school between $10,000 and $16,000 each year, according to estimates from the Environmental Protection Agency. • Management skills your employees will appreciate
Managers who are overly authoritative or controlling risk embittering the employees they oversee, writes Victor Lipman. For this reason, it's important for managers to be calm, caring and focused on communication. "When companies are concerned about turnover, productivity, and chronically high levels of employee disengagement, they need to look thoughtfully at how they're selecting and training their managers," he writes. • Proposed guest-worker program sparks debate, GOP concerns
A proposed guest-worker program has ignited a debate between local business groups and some Republican lawmakers in Kansas who hold contradicting views on immigration. The proposal, which could make Kansas a state that welcomes undocumented workers, is opposed by Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, who helped write strict immigration laws for Arizona and Alabama. The debate highlights a potential rift in the Republican Party. The Wall Street Journal (1/22) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
