  • PTA president responds to student video "We Are Hungry"
In this opinion piece, Kansas PTA President Tammy Bartels praises the federally mandated healthier school lunches that some Kansas teens recently criticized in an online video. Bartels cites rising childhood obesity statistics and the improved choices her own son, a sixth-grader and student athlete, is being offered at his school this year to highlight the need for the revised meal standards. "But just because a student doesn't like it, doesn't mean we shouldn't serve it or that they won't learn to enjoy it," Bartels writes. The Kansas City Star (Mo.) • New lunch debit card system offers privacy for students
The Freehold Regional High School District in New Jersey in mid-October will launch a prepaid card payment system for its school lunches. School officials hope the change will remove the "stigma" of being in the federal free- and reduced-lunch program. The $90,000 computerized system will allow students in all six of the district's high schools to use their identification cards to pay for meals, which makes separate lunch cards for the federal program unnecessary.
