News affecting dental benefits

  Industry News
  • Pediatric dental benefits mandated for all in Calif., Wash.
California and Washington will require that anyone buying health insurance through a public exchange purchase pediatric dental benefits, regardless of whether the subscriber has children. "That's the way spreading the risk works," said Andrea Rosen, an official with California's health insurance exchange. If a plan does not include pediatric dental coverage as part of a bundled package, the purchaser will be required to buy a stand-alone plan before completing the transaction. NADP argues that some people may drop their own adult dental coverage in order to afford the pediatric benefits. Medscape (free registration) (1/3) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • Debate continues on value of dental therapists
Alaska and Minnesota have licensed specially trained dental hygienists to provide care in underserved areas, and California and Oregon are among the states considering introducing so-called mid-level providers. Opponents, including the American Dental Association, say the role creates a two-tiered system of care that does not address the underlying issue of low Medicaid reimbursement rates. Proponents say it is the best way to provide quality care to people in need. Pacific Standard magazine/Pacific Standard (January/February 2013) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Study: Few states measure up on dental sealant initiatives
Most states lag in the percentage of children provided with dental sealants, about two-thirds lack sealant programs in schools with high need, just five received an A grade and 40% received a D or F grade in a Pew Children's Dental Campaign survey. Providing dental sealants for high-risk children through school-based programs is cost-effective and can help prevent caries while lowering Medicaid costs, research has shown.
