- Research explores challenges, solutions in ACO development
Researchers at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Jersey developing an accountable care organization have reported on a three-part approach to early establishment and the conceptual, cultural and other challenges they faced in the process. - Survey finds U.S. adults adjust their expectations about weight
A Gallup survey found 59% of men and 69% of women were heavier than their average ideal weight by one or more pounds. Researchers also found 60% of adults stated that their weight was just about right despite the worsening obesity epidemic, suggesting that Americans are adjusting their expectations about what constitutes ideal weight as their actual weight increases. - Nurses boost vaccination rates, study shows
Giving nurses the responsibility of administering vaccinations was significantly linked to an increase in the number of at-risk adults and older people getting flu or pneumonia shots, a study found. Along with call and text vaccine reminders, researchers said that nurse-led intervention was among the most effective vaccination-promoting methods. - FDA finds bacteria, fungi in 2 other NECC steroids
The FDA added to its list of contaminated medicines after discovering fungal growth and bacteria in New England Compounding Center's steroids betamethasone and triamcinolone, which have not been tied to the recent meningitis outbreak. - Mass. allows drug-sharing among hospitals facing shortages
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health adopted emergency rules that will let hospitals share treatments to address drug shortages caused by the closure of the New England Compounding Center and its sister company Ameridose following a national meningitis outbreak. Although the change won't address long-term problems, it is "a significant and positive step toward easing the medication shortage," the Massachusetts Hospital Association said.
