MilkPEP buys 30-second Super Bowl ad
The Milk Processor Education Program, which is responsible for a number of the well-known "Got Milk?" advertisements, is buying a 30-second commercial to be aired in the second quarter of Super Bowl XLVII. Dwayne Johnson, known as "the Rock," will appear in the commercial, which intends to show a father going to great lengths to procure milk for his children's cereal. Dean Foods uses Morningstar sale to reduce long-term debt
Dean Foods has paid off about $1 billion in loans using the proceeds from its $1.45 billion sale of Morningstar to Canada's Saputo, according to documents filed on Wednesday with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Growth in customer spending slows in December

Study: Adding calcium and vitamin D to diet boosts body-fat loss
Calcium and vitamin D supplements added to an energy-restrictive diet led to more body-fat loss over 12 weeks compared with just the diet alone, according to a study in Nutrition Journal. Study: Half of world's food goes to waste
According to a new report by Institution of Mechanical Engineers, about half of the 4.4 billion tons of food produced annually isn't eaten due to inefficient harvesting, storage and transportation or it is wasted by consumers and markets. "This level of wastage is a tragedy that cannot continue if we are to succeed in the challenge of sustainably meeting our future food demands," the group said in its report. CNN (1/10)

Foods costs rising faster than expected
A study using data from the Department of Commerce found that food costs for a family of four rose $2,055 above the previous trend line in 2012. Between 1950 and 2005, the cost of food steadily dropped, but since 2006 the cost has been rising. Supermarket News (free registration) (1/10)

Dairy firm tests dehydration for shelf-stable products
A new technology that creates shelf-stable dairy products is undergoing testing by dairy firm Gay Lea Foods. EnWave of Canada has created what it calls "radiant energy vacuum dehydration," a technology that the company says is a better alternative to freeze-drying, air drying or spray drying. FDA shifts focus to prevention in proposed food safety rules
The FDA proposed new food safety rules that would subject processors to stricter safety monitoring and require produce farmers to keep deadly bacteria out of their fields. All aspects of growing and harvesting produce will be covered by the proposed safety standards.
