- Growth in customer spending slows in December
Customers slowed their purchasing in December, a new report from First Data shows. Spending grew 4%, down from the typical 6% to 10%, the company reported. The slowdown was blamed on residual effects of Hurricane Sandy and anxiety over the "fiscal cliff" negotiations. QSRMagazine.com

- Study: Half of world's food goes to waste
According to a new report by Institution of Mechanical Engineers, about half of the 4.4 billion tons of food produced annually isn't eaten due to inefficient harvesting, storage and transportation or it is wasted by consumers and markets. "This level of wastage is a tragedy that cannot continue if we are to succeed in the challenge of sustainably meeting our future food demands," the group said in its report. CNN

- FDA shifts focus to prevention in proposed food safety rules
The FDA proposed new food safety rules that would subject processors to stricter safety monitoring and require produce farmers to keep deadly bacteria out of their fields. All aspects of growing and harvesting produce will be covered by the proposed safety standards.
