- Mich. district purchases software to manage school meals
A Michigan school district plans to use a software program to allow families to upload money for school meals to an account, which students can draw from while at school. The school board approved $13,037 for the purchase of the Magic Meal Corp. software program this week. The program, which also allows families to track purchases online, sets limits on how much a student can spend on meals each day. The initial cost includes training for school nutrition professionals. MLive.com (Michigan) (free registration)

- Students' food allergies offer hard lessons for schools
Officials in a school district in Pennsylvania are learning firsthand how difficult it can be to accommodate students with severe food allergies. The district is engaged in litigation -- now to be considered in federal court -- over precautions taken to protect a student with an allergy to nuts. District officials say a hearing officer heard the case and ruled in the district's favor, but a federal court ruling would trump that decision. Officials say the key to success often is cooperation between parents and schools. Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
