- Mostashari asks HIT committee to examine EHR use in overbilling
The advisory HIT Policy Committee has been asked by National HIT Coordinator Dr. Farzad Mostashari to determine whether providers are leveraging EHRs to overbill Medicare, according to the Center for Public Integrity. - ONC announces development of open source certification testing tool
The ONC has announced the creation of Cypress, an open source certification testing platform, to be used for calculating, reporting and capturing clinical quality measure outcomes under stage 2 of the EHR meaningful use initiative. - Panel brings attention to problems with hospital software
Computerized hospital equipment is increasingly becoming susceptible to malware infections -- a situation that may pose health threats to patients, according to experts at a meeting of a medical device panel at the National Institute of Standards and Technology Information Security & Privacy Advisory Board. This growing malware problem stems from the use of variants and older versions of Windows, as well as links to botnets, or groups of infected computers, experts said. There is also hesitancy on the part of manufacturers to modify equipment, even for antivirus software, because of worries that they may encounter problems with the FDA. Brian Fitzgerald, an FDA deputy director, said during the meeting that the agency is reviewing its policy on software. MIT Technology Review online
