Prefabricated modular construction is being implemented for a $250 million expansion of the Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Del. "It's very innovative. • Blueway: NYC's plan to strengthen East River waterfront
New York City wants to fortify a four-mile stretch of East River waterfront by developing a "Blueway" plan that includes construction of a storm barrier along the river. Designed by WXY Architecture + Urban Design, the project would include wetlands, mini parks, pedestrian bridges, a bike path and a sandy beach. "[T]he Blueway will offer people new ways to travel along the river and experience a new natural edge," said Adam Lubinsky of WXY. "And by re-establishing saltwater marsh to Lower Manhattan, the East River Blueway will bring biodiversity back to the river’s edge and provide a natural buffer against storm surges." • 3D printing adds a fourth dimension
So-called 4D printing takes 3D printing a step further, enabling individual chunks of material to assemble themselves intelligently into any form desired. The new technology from Skylar Tibbits activates individual strands of material that in turn guide themselves into the prescribed shapes. The process also has the advantage of enabling the objects to be self-adapting after their creation. (U.K.) (2/27) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • Architect as idea purveyor
A recent conference in New York City tackled the various issues facing the architecture field in the 21st century, including overbuilding, which was a result of unsuitable "flows of capital and the needs of the real economy," said panelist James von Klemperer, Kohn Pedersen Fox design partner. Some suggested that architects become "purveyors of ideas, rather than just designers of buildings." (2/26) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Precast to help S.C. stadium achieve efficiency goals
The use of precast concrete for the new Santa Clara Stadium in California is one of the key elements that will allow the San Francisco 49ers to meet their sustainability goals, writes Alex Espinoza. The facility is on pace to open next year, said Jack Hill, project executive. "We've incorporated a lot of energy saving measures within the stadium itself," Hill said. "We're here less than a year after we broke ground and the progress has just been amazing." San Francisco 49ers (2/26) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
