- CenturyLink rides business unit to wider profit
CenturyLink more than doubled its fourth-quarter net earnings from a year earlier, driven largely by the success of cloud-based business services, the telecom said Wednesday. The telecom made consumer gains as well, adding 41,000 broadband subscribers, for a total of 5.85 million. The company's Prism TV video service grew by 10,000, for a total of 115,000 subscribers. - Cisco says profits were up 44% in fiscal Q2
Network-gear-maker Cisco Systems says its net income was up 44% and its revenue increased 5% in its fiscal second quarter. CEO John Chambers said the results illustrate "cautious optimism" by IT buyers. Services revenues increased to $2.66 billion, Chambers said, adding that the figure is near the company's goal of services representing 25% of revenues in each quarter. The Register (U.K.)

European telecoms are turning to copper in response to growing competition from companies such as Liberty Global, which is investing heavily in cable assets to lure subscribers. Dozens of telecoms are testing a copper-wire-based solution called "vectoring" that turns the old-line technology into a speedy conduit for HD content and music without the need to spend billions on fiber-optic lines. - Google files patent lawsuits against BT in the U.K., U.S.
Google and its Motorola Mobility subsidiary filed lawsuits in U.K. and U.S. courts accusing BT Group of patent infringement. BT sued Google over patents in 2011. A representative of BT said the company doesn't provide comment on pending litigation. Reuters
