- AIA: Action is needed on export control, lending
The Export-Import bank needs a higher lending ceiling soon, and the federal government needs to modernize the export control system, writes Marion Blakey, president and CEO of the Aerospace Industries Association. Both moves are needed to keep the aerospace and defense industries exporting products, Blakey writes, and the stakes are high: Maryland and Virginia together, for instance, exported $1.6 billion in aerospace and defense products in 2010. - F-35 test flight is halted due to possible fuel leak
Test flights of the F-35 Joint Striker Fighter at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida were halted this week as mechanics hunt for a possible fuel leak on one of the planes. "Our pilot did the exact right thing in returning the jet back to Eglin," said Air Force Col. Andrew Toth, commander of the 33rd Fighter Wing. "Although there were issues, we are doing whatever we can to move the program forward safely and effectively." Reuters

- GOP candidates say they'd halt across-the-board defense cuts
GOP presidential candidates say they would halt sequestration cuts to defense budgets, but differ in how much they would give the military to spend. Rick Santorum favors a freeze on military spending, while Mitt Romney proposes baseline spending for defense that is 4% of the gross domestic product. Newt Gingrich, while not ruling out cuts, has called for military- equipment upgrades. Dayton Daily News (Ohio)

- Conservatives and businesses square off over Export-Import Bank
House leaders are caught between businesses and conservative groups over reauthorization of the Export-Import Bank, which hits its $100 billion loan limit this month. Conservatives oppose the move, while big businesses say exports could be crippled if it doesn't happen. The Ex-Im Bank does half its work for the aerospace industry. If the Export-Import bank isn't reauthorized, the consequences would be "astounding," said Michael Berger of the Aerospace Industries Association. The Hill/On The Money blog

- NOAA: Satellites are needed to bridge weather-forecasting gap
House lawmakers this week heard from a weather official that without funding for new satellites, the nation could be vulnerable to gaps in forecasting storms. "Without full funding, the risk that there would be a more significant [forecasting] gap increases greatly," National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration chief Jane Lubchenco told members of a House Science, Space and Technology subcommittee. New report expands on vital role of aerospace and defense industry to U.S. economy
Industry and labor join to "Stop the Clock" – Avoid Sequestration
On Wednesday, March 7, the Aerospace Industries Association and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers will release a detailed and far-reaching new study documenting the contributions of the aerospace and defense industry to America. The report contains extensive state-by-state assessments of aerospace and defense industry jobs, wages, revenue, taxes paid, trade, GDP and more. In addition, the AIA's Marion Blakey and Tom Buffenbarger of IAMAW will discuss how far-reaching the blow would be if the automatic "sequestration" budget cuts are not stopped before the trigger is pulled next January.
