- ANA recognizes 6 hospitals for use of nursing quality data
The ANA honored the six recipients of the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators Award for Outstanding Nursing Quality, including Akron Children's Hospital Mahoning Valley in Boardman, Ohio. Of the more than 1,900 hospitals considered for the award, six "demonstrated superior results and sustained improvement in patient outcomes that are tied to the quality of nursing services and nurse work environment factors," the group said. Other recipients are Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, N.J.; Craig Hospital in Englewood, Colo.; Rose Medical Center in Denver; Sharp Mesa Vista Hospital in San Diego and St. Francis Hospital -- The Heart Center in Roslyn, N.Y. Nurse.com

- Ill. reassesses deadline to hire certified school nurses
Illinois education officials say schools will not be able to meet a July 1 mandate for districts to hire certified school nurses who are trained to work with special education students. School administrators said certified nurses are in short supply. Cathy Yonkaitis, who leads the University of Illinois at Chicago's school nurse certification program, supported an interim step but said "certification should be what we're striving for." The State Journal-Register (Springfield, Ill.)

- Kansas City-area medical research takes aim at cancer
A research collaboration between Children's Mercy Hospital and the University of Kansas Medical Center aims to reformulate cancer drugs for children as better-tasting liquids. The KU hospital has been designated as a National Cancer Institute cancer center, and Children's Mercy is working on several cancer projects with other research centers. The Kansas City Star (Mo.)
