  • Debate continues over expanding hygienists' scope of practice
    Some states are considering following Minnesota and Alaska's lead in expanding the scope of practice for specially trained dental hygienists in an effort to provide dental care to more people.   • Scientists grow living teeth
    Scientists cultured epithelial cells from adult human gums, mixed them with mouse mesenchymal tooth cells and transplanted the mixture into the tissue around the kidneys of living mice. Some of the cells grew into teeth, complete with dentin, enamel and roots. The research is reported in the Journal of Dental Research.   • Study explores tooth loss, heart disease risk factors
    As adults lose teeth, they face higher levels of an enzyme that promotes inflammation and atherosclerosis, high LDL cholesterol, hypertension and high blood glucose levels. The international study, presented at the American College of Cardiology's annual meeting, also found a link between gum bleeding and high blood pressure as well as higher levels of LDL cholesterol.   • 12% of patients have dentin hypersensitivity, study finds
    Forty percent of patients visiting general dental practices reported having experienced pain, sensitivity or discomfort in their teeth or gums, but only 12% were confirmed to have dentin hypersensitivity, a study published in the Journal of the American Dental Association found. The study involved 37 practices and 787 participants. Those with dentin hypersensitivity were more likely to be women, younger than 65, have gingival recession and have a history of at-home tooth whitening, the researchers found.
