Employers face fines in states that forgo Medicaid expansion
Employers in states that refuse to expand their Medicaid programs may be liable for up to $1.3 billion in federal fines, according to a report by Jackson Hewitt Tax Service. The Affordable Care Act will penalize employers that don't provide health coverage to workers, but employers are exempt from the penalty if workers qualify for Medicaid. Bloomberg (3/13)

Employers that doubt the legitimacy of an employee's request for a disability accommodation should check guidance from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, lawyer Jon Hyman writes. If an employee's claimed disability isn't obvious, then "an employer is entitled to receive 'reasonable documentation' about the disability and its functional limitations," Hyman writes. Should we restock extinct species?
Researchers are looking at ways to use ancient DNA to resurrect long-extinct species. Species such as the Tasmanian tiger and the passenger pigeon may be good candidates for "de-extinction." In particular, scientists are exploring three possibilities: cloning, "reverse engineering" using the extinct species' closest living relative, and "breeding back" using strategic mating to bring back characteristics of the extinct animal.
